Event Details

Popotillo art (colored straw mosaics) has Pre-columbian roots. The straw is grown in several Mexican states and Mexico City s a center for popotillo art. In this class we will create a popotillo mosaic piece by covering the design with a fine layer of cera de Campeche, a special type of beeswax. We will cut the straw down to fill portions of the design, then press each piece into the beeswax, a meditative process with a beautiful outcome. We use a window design popularized by Frank Lloyd Wright called Tree of Life.
Maritza Hernandez was raised in Puebla Mexico. She trained in veterinary medicine and possesses a multitude of artistic skills. She serves as the cultural ambassador for the annual Dia des Los Muertos celebration and taught popotillo art in the Southwest Nebraska Art Camp (SNAC) during the summer 2024 session.
